Persian type has come a long way over the years.
These old pictures, scanned from various sources, present a striking contrast
between the Longhairs of yesteryear and modern Persians. Prior to Stud
Book 49
(September 15, 1950), CFA's registration rules did not specify any particular breeds that
could be registered as Longhairs, so Persians, Angoras, Maine Cats, Australian Cats, and
others were all registered as Longhairs. Beginning with Stud Book 49 (September 15,
1950), CFA's registration rules specifically defined Longhairs as Persians or Angoras,
although they were listed together in the Stud Books. Finally, beginning with
Stud Book 83 (September 1957), Persians and other Longhairs (initially only
Himalayans) were listed separately by breed.
